Conference: Dynamics on flat surfaces and their moduli spaces

Dates: April 20-24, 2020
Venue: HIM lecture hall, Poppelsdorfer Allee 45, Bonn
Organizers: Manfred Einsiedler (Zürich), Martin Möller (Frankfurt), Anke Pohl (Bremen), Tom Ward (Leeds)

Description:

Flat surfaces arise from understanding the dynamics of polygonal billiards. The moduli space of flat surfaces has rich intrinsic geometry, much as the moduli space of curves, and admits and $SL_2(R)$-action, allowing to draw parallels to the dynamics on homogeneous spaces.

This workshop will focus on the dynamics of the horocycle flow and the $SL_2(R)$-action, for example on the classification of orbit closures, and study the geometry and topology of the moduli space as a whole, for example via characteristic quantities such as Mazur-Veech volumes and Siegel-Veech constants.
