A journey through high dimensions: from Dante to modern algebraic geometry

One of the most captivating and paradigmatic ideas in mathematics is the concepts of dimension. Every day, geometers across the globe immerse themselves in spaces exceeding the classical three dimensions - spaces that can have any number of dimensions, or even infinitely many of them. How can we possibly envision worlds that elude our human senses? What does a sphere or a cube look like in dimension four? What does it mean that a space we cannot stare at has a hole? Interestingly, when our visual senses fail, algebra comes to our rescue.
This night I will lead you on a tour through exotic spatial dimensions. We shall climb Dante's Paradise, and marvel at exquisite masterpieces and elegant architectures. Ultimately, we will discuss some of the latest breakthroughs in algebraic geometry.

Mirko Mauri promovierte in Mathematik am Imperial College London, als Mitglied der London School of Geometry and Number Theory, unter der Leitung von Paolo Cascini. Er war IST-BRIDGE- und Marie-Skłodowska-Curie-Postdoktorand am Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), Postdoctoral Assistant Professor an der University of Michigan und Postdoctoral Fellow am Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn. Derzeit ist Mirko Mauri einer der Gruppenleiter des Junior Trimester Programs "Algebraic geometry: derived categories, Hodge theory, and Chow groups" am HIM.
